Currently, building automation infrastructure requires some level of data scrubbing to remove new releases and roll-outs, the same functionality used in ERP systems. Cisco introduced its BlueScope platform with the goal of removing the need for data scrubbing and automation. It does this by creating an intelligent infrastructure to do what building automation systems do, but with a built-in fail-over capability. Data scrubbing is performed by the BlueScope platform, and data would be stored in a collection of Sys-level storage accounts. The Sys-level storage accounts would be configured to run in the background and refresh themselves periodically. When a failure occurs, the Sys-level storage accounts will run for a short period of time, after which they are discarded and a fresh copy will be created in the database.
BlueScope is built as an independent tool, and the Sys-level storage accounts can be installed into various monitoring systems to enable many of the automation capabilities. BlueScope can also be used as a public cloud service by providing a unified host name for all of the Sys-level storage accounts. This provides a common hostname in any one platform for uploading and retrieving Sys-level storage accounts, and these accounts can be installed into multiple monitoring systems with the single provisioning. This provides cost savings for hosting automation infrastructure in the cloud.
BlueScope as a managed service is a highly sought after feature, but is not currently available as a service from Cisco. In terms of user adoption, BlueScope is a free tool. However, a paid service is available to run on the BlueScope platform.
BlueScope uses Cisco’s HUB and STS technologies to offer custom capabilities like network VLANs, virtual private networks (VPNs), IPv6 by design, intelligent network management (IDM), secure networking, and load balancing.
